Virtual reality will bring a highly immersive dimension to the metaverse, as imagined through sci-fi literature and films such as Ready Player One where most of humanity convenes in virtual worlds in headsets and full-body haptic feedback suits from the comfort of their homes. It is vital to begin research on the metaverse and its oncoming consequences for humankind. How will the metaverse change the meaning of social connection and, more profoundly, the meaning of life as we experience it?
